In 'Homage to the Square' Joseph Albers explored the interaction of colours placed in juxtaposition in the form of squares set one inside another. The simple composition remained the same, but varying the colours gave rise to a series with a great visual complexity. Albers saw the various colour compositions as different climates or characters. The abstract colour surfaces enter into a relationship with one another. Here colour is both an objective and a means.
