The rhyming couplet is an old variant of the familiar proverb ‘A bird
in the hand is worth two in the bush’. In the seventeenth century
pictures of birdcages often had an erotic connotation, particularly
if the door was open, but that is not the case here. The inscription
reads: ‘My little birds are quick, so I must shut them up, for better
two inside than thrice two outside.’
