The nest thief, in this case a small boy who has taken a nest of
fedglings out of a tree and put it in his cap, was a popular theme in
the seventeenth century. The print portrays human rapacity, as the
inscription explains: ‘I found this nest so I took it. I thought he who
fnds it owns it, if I don’t take it someone else will.’
