From the early 1960s Richter worked in a Photo-Realist style in which he copied black and white photographs onto canvas. Gradually he became fascinated with the grey-white structure of the paint and began to blur the contours of his subjects, as in this painting of a chair, or to copy out-of-focus photographs.
