The art of creating a deceptive illusion of reality, known in the seventeenth century as 'trompe l'oeil', has been taken up again, but nowadays it is called 'hyper-realism' or 'sharp-focus realism'. The 'Italian chair' clearly comes under this heading. Bravo has reproduced the form and the materials in such a way that it seems, to use John Canady's words, 'as if he had eyes ten times as sensitive as ordinary eyes'. Moreover, by making it appear as if the flat surface has a third dimension he produces an emotionally alienating effect.
