This unusual still life showing muffs, which were articles usually made of fur, and worn to keep the hands warm - is the work of the many-talented engraver Hollar. One of his expertises was making prints illustrating clothing, which accounts for the meticulous care with which he portrays the muffs. An insignificant article, he gives them a life of their own, adding a fan, a pair of gloves and a mask. The print is one of nine still lifes he made illustrating muffs.
