This a design for a print for the title page of a new edition of the Breviarium Romanum (1655). Van Diepenbeeck was commissioned by the Antwerp publisher Plantin. The drawing was indented with a metal stylus to transfer the composition to a copper plate for the subsequent engraving. Evidently this never happened, as another artist’s drawing was used for the title print.
