Ask anything

  • Valerio Fichera asked

Hello, I am 16 year old student from Germany and I need your help for my history-project. Could you please say me what is written on the left upper corner of the drawing with the headline "Die Gefangenen klagen"?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Valerio, in the text the farmer couple in chains complains about their fate: their farm has been set on fire, their stock has been stolen and their children have been murdered. They themselves have been enslaved. They are forced to pull the plow and are given barley as food, just like the horses. Best, Rianne

More information

This Turkish horseman carries off a couple in chains. In the text, the man and his wife bemoan their fate: their farmhouse has been burnt down, their cattle have been stolen, their children have been murdered-and they have been taken as slaves. They have to pull a plough and eat barley, like horses.
