Steffan Goldschmidt gave up his trade as a goldsmith to fight as a lansquenet. He probably had no choice, finding that he could no longer earn a living from his craft. The Iconoclasm and the Reformation made it extremely difficult to survive as an artist in many German and Swiss cities.
