Author: Albert Elen

This is a folio from a hypothetical lost drawing book, a remnant of which is now part of an eighteenth-century album called the Gozzoli Album, held in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. For a general description, see here.

This page was originally folio 59 recto in the hypothetical lost drawing book. The folio number at lower left is not visible (covered by the album edge), but can be deduced from the second foliation ‘57’ at top right, which is always two numbers behind the first. Long before the present album was constructed, the sheet was torn in the lower section, which was then provisionally repaired by attaching a paper strip on the reverse.

The figure of a walking child at lower left and the standing angel at lower right are related to an autograph drawing of a putto by Gozzoli now in Dresden and the child is also found on folio 17 recto in the Gozzoli Album.[1] The angel is also found on an autograph drawing by Gozzoli now in Chantilly.[2] There are drawings of hands on folio 19 verso and 20 recto as well.
