This work is very different to Breu’s circular drawing, but the difference resides primarily in its function. This is a study, probably made from life, although probably in phases: first the man carrying a barrel, and then a man sitting on a barrel. After all, the models would not have been capable of such an acrobatic feat. Does the carrying of this strange load have a symbolic meaning? We will probably never know.
