Author: Albert Elen

This is a folio from a hypothetical lost drawing book, a remnant of which is now part of an eighteenth-century album called the Gozzoli Album, held in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. For a general description, see here.

This page was originally folio 44 recto in the hypothetical lost volume (now a verso in the album).

The eagle’s head goes back to models by Pisanello (1395-1455), such as one in the Codex Vallardi, now in Paris.[1] The camel (not a dromedary) is related to the two camels in the long retinue of the Magi depicted in the landscape background of Gozzoli’s fresco The Journey of the Magi on the west wall of the Cappella dei Magi in Palazzo Medici, Florence.[2] The motif is also found in the tondo with The Adoration of the Magi by Domenico Veneziano (1410-1461), now in Berlin, which was probably also painted for Piero di Cosimo de’ Medici (1416-1469), but earlier around 1440-43, and may have been an easily accessible source of inspiration for Gozzoli and his pupils.[3]
