It is possible that one of the sisters of Rubens’ wife, Hélène Fourment, was the model for this drawing. For his portraits Rubens often employed the drawing technique known as ‘au trois crayons’: three different coloured chalks. In the 18th century this technique was popular among French artists, especially Watteau, who was a great admirer of Rubens.
