  • Marie VIDAL asked

Can you tell me more about the drawing A man playing the harp and a Man playing the Violin (Antoon Sallaert.

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hello Marie, I am not sure what kind of information you would like to have. I can tell you that this is a small drawing (17 x 22 cm) in black chalk. At that time drawings were either studies for a painting or studeis after a painting (to record a composition), but unfortunately I cannot tell you to which painting the drawing is connected. It is interesting that the musicians look as if they come from classical antiquity, with their sandals, robes and laurel crowns. Sallaert made the drawing in a time that this period was re-discovered. We call this period the Renaissance. Kind regards, Els
