Mattia Preti

Taverna 1613 - Malta 1699

Mattia Preti was probably in Rome before 1630; he worked there in his brother Gregorio's studio. Before this, he had already become acquainted with the painting techniques of Caravaggio in Naples. He also went to Venice and Emilia, where he saw works by Guercino and Lanfranco. His paintings show the influence of Caravaggio, although his frescoes tend more towards the work of Guercino. In 1661 Preti left for Malta in order to produce paintings for the interior of the San Giovanni van Valletta. In the same year, he was knighted on Malta for his work and Preti spent the rest of his life on the island.
