Pieter Pourbus lived and worked in Bruges. In his religious works, he painted in the Italianate style of Lancelot Blondeel, who was his father-in-law. His portraits have a somewhat stiff and formal character, but in style are comparable to those of his contemporaries. Pourbus was the head of a family of painters; his grandson Frans II was the most creditable. Frans (1569-1622) painted for various European courts.
