Quinten Massijs (I)

Leuven 1465/1466 - Antwerpen 1530

Quentin Massys was admitted to the guild of Antwerp in 1491 and his earliest known work dates from 1509. He may well have travelled to Italy between 1514 and 1519. We find knowledge of Italian art in the work of Massys. In 1520 he had a house built in Antwerp and he had the façade decorated with frescoes and sculptures. Albrecht Dürer is said to have visited the house. Massys also introduced a new presentation of a learned man in his study.
