Stefan Lochner

Meersburg circa 1410 - Keulen 1451

Stefan Lochner's year of birth is unknown. He was active in Cologne from 1442 and died in 1451. Lochner is the most famous master of the Cologne school and an important representative of the International Gothic. It is thought that he was trained in the Netherlands, possibly by the monks of Limburg of the Master of Flémalle. His masterpiece, a large altarpiece with patron saints of the city of Cologne, is in the Dom in Cologne.
