Portrait of Armand Roulin

Vincent van Gogh (in 1888)

Ask anything

  • Mike S asked

I realize that the museum is undergoing renovations but I wanted to check if Van Gogh paintings are planned to be viewable in late April, particularly the Roulin Portrait. (The exhibit in Amsterdam will be long gone by then when I am able to visit).

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Hi Mike, Yes, you are lucky. The portrait will be on show at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), together with many other beloved paintings from the collection (Tower of Babel, Bosch, Monet, Basquiat etc etc). We are preparing a presentation in the big exhibition hall on the fifth floor. It opens this Friday, March 23rd. Kind regards, Els

  • Roberto Zagaroli asked

When will the Portrait of Armand Roulin return for viewing at the depot and where is it right now?
    Thanks

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Hi Roberto,
The portrait of Armand Roulin by Van Gogh is currently at Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam for the exhibition "Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen at Rijksmuseum" untill mid January 2024. There you can see the painting in question exhibited together with many other highlights of the Boijmans collection.
    Bye,
    Mara

  • Yuan Min Li asked

Is "Portrait of Armand Roulin" the only one art piece of Van Gogh in the museum? Is it currently on display? Thank you!

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Li, no, there are more works by Van Gogh in the museum collection. You can find them all by searching the online collection on 'Vincent van Gogh'. You will find 7 paintings and several works on paper. Kind regards, Els

  • Steven asked

I bought a framed print of this particular portrait at a local auction in York, PA (USA) and it has a label on the back stating "PORTRAIT D'ARAND ROULIN" (65X54) ARLES, NOVEMBRE 1888 Collection D. G. Van Beuningen, Vierhouten"

can you tell me anything about it? the frame is old and the back hasn't been disturbed - so I assume it's as originally bought...

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Steven, thank you for sharing your interesting find. As you probably know D.G. van Beuningen is one of the private art collectors who supported the Boijmans Museum in Rotterdam. After his death, in 1958, the museum bought a large part of his collection, amongst which Van Gogh's Portrait of Armand Roulin, and started to carry a double name: Boijmans Van Beuningen. The Van Beuningen family owned (and this owns) an estate in Vierhouten. Probably the reproduction of the Van Gogh painting was on the wall there after the sale of the original. Kind regards, Els

  • About the artist

While staying in Arles in the south of France, Van Gogh befriended the station postal clerk Joseph Roulin. He portrayed the whole family: the postal clerk, his wife, their baby daughter and also their son, who can be seen here. The 17 year old Armand, with his downy moustache and gloomy look, is a true adolescent.
