  • caroline asked

Hi, In Christ blessing the children and healing the sick by Rembrandt in 1648, who is the older man with a white beard on the far left who is holding the attention of the people around him?
    thanks

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Hi Caroline,
The older man with a white beard is a part of the group of about 8 men who are talking about what they saw or heard behind the wall. They are what is called 'schriftgeleerden' in Dutch and Pharisees who wanted to test Christ. They are mentioned in Matthew 19 (verse 3) which is the chapter in the Bible of which Rembrandt used the motives in his 'Hundred Guilder Print'. Best, Lisa
