Friends

Every year the Friends contribute towards a dream purchase, are part of a lively group of art lovers who love Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and are closely involved with what goes on in the museum. Every contribution is welcome.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is one of the leading national and international art museums. With your support, we can continue this success now, and for future generations. The Friends have been supporting the museum for thirty years and in 2017 we are celebrating this anniversary with special events, including Friends’ Day on Saturday 8 July.

You decide how much you give to support the museum every year. As thanks for your contribution:

  • you are closely involved with what goes on in the museum
  • you receive invitations to special events, including the annual Friends’ Day
  • for an annual contribution of €50 or more you get a personal Friends Pass which gives you free fast-lane access to the museum and a 10% discount in the Museum Shop

In 1903 twenty-six friends gave the museum this painting by Van Gogh, ‘Poplars near Nuenen’. It was his first work in a public art collection! Thanks to this extraordinary gift and many that followed, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen now has an extraordinarily wide-ranging collection – from Bosch, Rembrandt and Van Gogh to Dalí and Dutch Design. Boijmans is the only Dutch museum offering this superb overview of western art.

Director Sjarel Ex said, ‘At TEFAF 2015, I chanced upon René Magritte’s enigmatic work ‘Le miroir vivant’ – a find I had dreamed of for years. Countless donations enabled us to purchase it. This early work in Magritte’s oeuvre is a major addition to the collection of Surrealist works that helps make Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen one of the world’s greatest museums.’
