Boijmans Ahoy drive-thru museum
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Rotterdam Ahoy have entered into a unique partnership: a drive-thru exhibition. From 1 to 23 August, you can drive your own or a borrowed electric car through Rotterdam Ahoy’s 10,000 m2 Hall 1 and see more than fifty high-profile artworks from the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
Nature vs. culture
The Boijmans Ahoy Drive-Thru Museum has been created in response to the 1.5-metre social-distancing rule and highlights the current tension between man and nature. The world we have created it is under pressure, and nature is demanding more space. Despite its microscopic size, the virus has unleashed great chaos, bringing everything to a standstill and revealing our vulnerability and the limits of existence. We have fallen back upon our most basic needs and retreated into the groups in which we feel safest. Art can offer us comfort and help us to put things into perspective, and it can also show us the unpredictable and fickle nature of human existence. This exhibition explores the boundary between humanity and the forces of nature. You drive through the space, experiencing everything from the safe cocoon of your own car. Once inside the show there is only one direction and it is straight ahead.
Artworks and artists
The exhibition is based on an idea by Ted Noten. It features world-famous works from the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and installations by contemporary artists that reflect on how people relate to their natural environment. Boijmans Ahoy Drive-Thru Museum brings together works by Ted Noten, Oskar Kokoschka, Bas Jan Ader, Melanie Smith, Paul McCarthy, Bruce Nauman, Ugo Rondinone, Cyprien Gaillard, Joep van Lieshout, Wieki Somers and Jim Shaw, and installations by Bas Princen, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Anselm Kiefer, Olaf Nicolai and Marijke van Warmerdam.
Drive-Thru in an electric car
You can access the exhibition Boijmans Ahoy Drive-Thru Museum only by using an electric car. Use your own electric car or borrow one supplied by Rotterdam-based car dealer Breeman BMW & MINI. To use the electric BMW or MINI (the cars are not manual), you sign a user form on the spot, you receive instructions on how to use the car and take a test drive on the test track before proceeding to the exhibition entrance.
Enjoying art in the drive-thru museum without driving
From a special visitor’s gallery in the art show you have a view on this spectacle and you will discover a number of masterpieces from the Boijmans collection. The hall is dimly lit and is illuminated by the headlights of the cars driving through it. With the Promenade ticket you have entrance to the visitors’ gallery and the Transit the outdoor area of the drive-thru with a test area for the cars and a café with terrace.
Documentary constructing the exhibition
Hans Peter Wessels documented the construction of the exhibition 'Boijmans Ahoy drive-thru museum'. A collective effort, that resulted in an exhibition about the present time and about the relationship between man and nature, shows art to scale and can be experienced from the car.

Practical details
The exhibition is open only to electric and hybrid cars. You can bring your own electric car or borrow a Mini Cooper made available by Breeman BMW. These cars are cleaned after every use.
You purchase tickets online in advance for all occupants of the car and reserve a time slot at which you wish to enter the exhibition. Inside you drive at a maximum of 5 kilometres per hour on the designated course. Along the way you will encounter a variety of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, video works and installations. If you want to take a longer look at a particular work of art, you may park in one of the designated parking spaces. You will exit the exhibition after around 45 minutes. You can then visit the roadside restaurant and have a snack and a drink in your own car or take a seat on the terrace.
Traffic rules
- The driver of the car must be in possession of a valid driving license and must have it with him and hand it over.
- All Dutch traffic rules also apply in the drive-thru.
- Maximum speed is 5 km per hour (at walking pace).
- Don't get out of the car.
- Keep distance.
- After each ride, the car is cleaned in accordance with RIVM's corona regulations and prepared for the next ride.
- (Domestic) animals are not allowed in the cars and the exhibition.
- Only electric cars are allowed to enter the exhibition. Hybrid cars are not allowed.
