Ask anything

  • Paulina asked

What are some texts I can read to find out more about the Aix altarpiece and its history?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Paulina, there haven't been many publications on this recently. Our collection catalogue French and German Paintings contains a text about it, also available in English, but dated 1995. A more recent publication is Dominique Thiébaut (dir.), Primitifs français. Découvertes et redécouvertes : Exposition au musée du Louvre du 27 février au 17 mai 2004, Paris, RMN, 2004, 192 p. (ISBN 2-7118-4771-3), p. 123-141. Good luck! Best, Friso Lammertse

More information

This depiction of the prophet Isaiah once formed part of a triptych in the cathedral of Aix en Provence in the south of France. The central panel still hangs there. The right hand panel is in the Musées Royaux des Beaux Arts de Belgique in Brussels. The still life with books was sawn off the top of this panel by an art dealer in the 19th century. The Rijksmuseum now owns the still life.
