In 1565 the Dutch engraver Cornelis Cort went to Italy, where his talent was recognized by the famous artist Titian. Cort’s innovative engraving style, with swelling and diminishing lines, was ideally suited to translating Titian’s colour palette into print. The painting reproduced here is now in the Prado in Madrid. It depicts the adoration of God the Father, Christ and the Holy Ghost by a host of angels, saints and other denizens of heaven.
