More information

This Chine de Commande cup and saucer is painted in many colours and shows a milkmaid with a pail on her head stepping over a fence. The ornamental edges are gilded. The bottom of the saucer shows a farmer girl with her lower body naked. Since people sometimes drank from the saucer, the guests at a tea party would be able to see this saucy illustration. The illustration is based on a fable by the French writer Jean de La Fontaine.
