Tiziano Aspetti

Padua circa 1559 - Pisa 1606

The mannerist sculptor Tiziano Aspetti learnt the trade of bronze casting in his family's studio. Between 1580 and 1600, he was one of the most prominent sculptors in Venice. He worked on major commissions in Venice and Padua. Aspetti, however, worked mostly for Giovanni Grimani, known for his collection of antique sculptures. Aspetti restored antique sculptures for Grimani and made many works for his patron's residence. Later, Aspetti moved to Pisa, where he ended up with a nephew of Grimani. The famous marble quarries of Carrara, which were located very near to Pisa, inspired Aspetti to make sculptures in stone.
