Giovanni Battista Moroni

Bondio 1520 - 1578/1579

Giovanni Battista Moroni was a pupil of Moretto da Brescia and worked for some time as assistant in his studio. In 1548, Moroni was present at the church Council of Trent, where the articles of faith which were contested by the Protestants were drawn up. This event would have an influence on his religious works. His best known works are his portraits. He was considered by some as one of the greatest portrait painters of the 16th century in Italy. At the end of his life he painted several altar pieces.
