The Rotterdam-based artist Anne Wenzel (1972) presents Requiem of Heroism, an installation which includes new ceramics.

Anne Wenzel has long been fascinated by the universal language of (war) monuments and commemorative sites. She has a particular fondness for monuments whose grandeur has been ravaged by time. The resulting contrast plays a central role in her work. Her gloomy ceramic sculptures and installations explore the beauty hidden in menace, devastation, disasters and decay.

This monument in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen does not commemorate a specific event, but elucidates her exploration of the act of commemoration in general. Wenzel’s monument suggests not only the heroic, glorious moment at which the wreathes were laid, but also the gradual process of decay as the lilies wilt. This installation, which Wenzel has made specially for these spaces in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, fits seamlessly with the architecture of the collections building designed by Adrianus van der Steur (1893-1953).

Anne Wenzel (1972, Schüttorf, Germany) studied at the AKI, Academy of Art and Design in Enschede and has lived and worked for many years in Rotterdam. The installation at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is the result of a residency at the European Ceramic Workcentre in Den Bosch.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen regularly invites contemporary artists to make site-specific interventions that reflect upon the museum’s collection or its architecture. Intervention #13 – Requiem of Heroism has been organised by the Curator of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s City Collection.
