On Sunday June 8th, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will have a screening of the film Goltzius and the Pelican Company in collaboration with Benelux Film Distributers and Kassander Film. Visit the work of Hendrick Goltzius in the museum before or after the screening (Juno receiving the eyes of Argus from Mercury, 1615, room 7).
There will another screening of the film on Sunday May 25th (with an introduction by Peter Greenaway).

Goltzius and the Pelican Company

The film is about Hendrik Goltzius, a late 16th century Dutch printer and engraver of erotic prints. He seduces the Margrave of Alsace into paying for a printing press to make and publish illustrated books. Goltzius promises him an extraordinary book of pictures of the Old Testament Biblical stories. Erotic tales of Lot and his daughters, David and Bathsheba, Samson and Delilah and John the Baptist and Salome. To tempt the Margrave further, Goltzius and his printing company will offer to perform dramatizations of these erotic stories for his court.

Peter Greenaway

Peter Greenaway was born in Wales and educated in London. He was trained as a painter for four years, and started making his own films in 1966.
His first feature film The Draughtsman’s Contract established him internationally as one of the most original and important film-makers of our times, a reputation consolidated by some 13 further feature films including The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Prospero’s Books and The Pillow-Book. Recently Greenaway received the BAFTA Outstanding British Contribution To Cinema Award in 2014.
Peter Greenaway is currently working on a film about the world famous artist Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) of which Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has an exhibition on display (Brancusi, Rosso, Man Ray – Framing Sculpture) until May 11th.
