A conversation with artist Arne Hendriks and design archeologist Michael Shanks (Professor at Hasso PLattner Institute of Design, Stanford University) about the tradition of being smaller. Why should this notion prevail over the human desire to improve, increase and enlarge?
‘Design Column #5 Body Building’ reflects on our changing body. The limitation to growth, given by the economic downfall, could change our perspective to understanding heath. Through films, products and prototypes designers including Arne Hendriks, Elena Beelaerts, Tuur van Balen and Revital Cohen explore new approaches in caring for our body.
'Design Column #5 Body Building’ investigates where the desires and boundaries are?
Michael Shanks is a Design Archaeologist and Professor at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, Stanford University, California.
Arne Hendriks is an artist and exhibition maker based in Amsterdam. He’s almost 2 meters tall but not too happy about it. Especially when he found out that every centimeter above 152 cm takes about 6 months of your life expectation. Arne Hendriks is a Master of Art (University of Amsterdam, 2001) and works passionately in the field of open-design, hacking, speculative research, education and the fine culture of repair. He’s married and has identical twin sons. Both of whom at 7 have reached the height of an adult Mbuti pygmy. At 136cm each if you put them together they are the same height as Robert Wadlow, the tallest person that ever lived (272cm).
