Location: Hand Made: Long Live Crafts
During the exhibition Hand Made: long Live Crafts, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will be bringing crafts to life. The museum will display more than 500 objects where short video’s illustrate the process of producing the artefacts on show. The exhibition incorporates two specially equipped workshops where craftspeople will be working continuously, as well as demonstrating various craft techniques.
WANDSCHAPPEN was founded by visual artists Nicole Driessens and Ivo van den Baar. Based on their own artistic practice, they develop projects and products that are closely related to their direct living and working environment. They work together with other artists, designers and local residents. Their unique objects are handmade by craftspeople from their neighbourhood, Rotterdam Charlois, where they have discovered a wealth of craft skills. In March 2012 WANDSCHAPPEN launched the new collection Feltplants, based on the silhouettes of plants on a windowsill.
The DHTA has been offering a range of courses in shoe-making techniques for more than twenty-five years. The Industrial Footwear Design course teaches students everything about the industrial production of shoes. In the Traditional Shoemaking department students learn how to make the ten basic shoe models. Here, you see DHTA demonstrating all the skills required in traditional shoemaking: reading the design drawing, pattern making, pattern cutting, stitching uppers, and attaching heels and soles. Specially for Hand Made, the students used traditional techniques to make the "AS" sneakers shown here.
