from March 10 2012 until 23 June
The museum launched Art Rocks! during the Rotterdam Museum Night on 10 March 2012. This cross-media project includes a major national music competition, various workshops, events and concerts in the museum and a musical multimedia tour. A project filled with musical surprises in the museum. Art Rocks! has been made possible by the BankGiro Loterij, the cultural lottery of the Netherlands.
Musicians from all over the Netherlands had until 13 May to upload a track to www.artrocks.nl inspired by a work of art in the museum, such as Bruegel’s famous Tower of Babel, the Little Dancer by Degas or the famous Lobster Telephone by Dalí. No fewer than 193 acts signed up for Art Rocks! Boijmans Music Competition. Participants have the chance of making a video clip, performing live in the museum and winning a first prize of 1000 euros. The Art Rocks! Boijmans Music Competition is being organised in collaboration with De Grote Prijs van Nederland: the Netherlands’ largest and best-known music competition.
Try Acrobatics received 574 public votes by 14 May at www.artrocks.nl and in the museum and have therefore secured a place in the final. The nine other finalists were selected on 22 May by a jury of professionals, comprising music journalist and radio presenter Jasper van Vugt, art historian Kees Hogenbirk, editor of LiveXS Klaas Knooihuizen, and singer Odilo Girod.

10. Try Acrobatics – PUBLIC’S CHOICE
The ten finalists have made their own videos, which you can now watch on www.artrocks.nl. From now on the public again have a chance to vote in the race to find the best act. Your last chance to vote is during the final on 23 June in the museum, when the public will choose the overall winner of the Art Rocks! Boijmans Music Competition.
The final of the Art Rocks! Boijmans Music Competition will take place on Saturday 23 June 2012 from 8.00 p.m. until midnight. The ten finalists will perform their tracks live in the museum. There will also be performances by Lucky Fonz III and Giovanca. The evening will bring the cross-media project Art Rocks! to a festive close. During this evening the public will choose the winner of the Art Rocks! Boijmans Music Competition.
For a period of three months during Art Rocks!, the museum organises, in collaboration with the Rotterdam foundation Music Matters, an extensive programme for young and old, with music workshops, jam sessions, master classes, museum concerts and much more.
Art Rocks! has been made possible by the BankGiro Loterij. According to the BankGiro Loterij, Art Rocks! provides an original perspective for popularising the museum collection. The project offers an accessible way for a new public to become acquainted with art.
Around 700,000 people in the Netherlands play in the BankGiro Loterij. They can win prizes and at the same time support windmills, museums and monuments in the Netherlands. Thanks to its participants, the BankGiro Loterij was able to contribute sixty million Euro in 2010 for the preservation of the Dutch cultural heritage. The Hermitage Amsterdam, for example, came into being thanks to a major contribution from the lottery. Participants of the BankGiro Loterij also support public favourites such as Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Beeld en Geluid [Image and Sound], the Railway Museum, the Dutch Open Air Museum, the Dutch Association of Windmills and Palace Het Loo.
The Art Rocks! Boijmans Music Competition is being organised in collaboration with De Grote Prijs van Nederland [The Big Prize of the Netherlands]. The Art Rocks! Workshops & Events are being organisation in collaboration with Music Matters.
