from June 25 2011 until October 16 2011
This summer Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen looks back at Han Nefkens’ first ten years of patronage with the presentation of a special catalogue and exhibition in the museum’s entrance area. According to Han Nefkens, writer, patron and art activist: ‘Giving is one of the most undervalued things in our society’.
What does a patron do? How do you become one? And why are private patrons so important? In the Willem van der Vorm gallery visitors can discover the world of Han Nefkens and the projects he has initiated over the past ten years under the name H+F, such as H+F Collection, H+F Patronage, ArtAids and H+F Fashion on the Edge. The exhibition includes video interviews in which artists, designers and curators talk about the opportunities they have been afforded by Nefkens’ patronage. Visitors can also watch a video in which Han Nefkens is interviewed by the journalist and presenter Hanneke Groenteman.
The opening of the exhibition coincides with the presentation of the publication ‘Han Nefkens - 10 Years of Patronage’. The 46 short texts written by Han Nefkens give the reader an intimate glimpse into Nefkens’ life as a patron and an insight into the genesis of the H+F Collection. A large number of works from the H+F Collection are illustrated in the catalogue.
In addition to the exhibition in the Willem van der Vorm gallery, a selection of works from Han Nefkens’ collection of contemporary art will be displayed throughout the museum. The displays will include works by Desiree Dolron, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Jeff Wall, Ryan Gander and Shirana Shahbazi.
In celebration of ten years of patronage of the collector and art activist Han Nefkens, this summer works from his H+F Collection are on display at various points throughout the museum. Read more.
In 2000 Han Nefkens began the H+F Collection: a collection of contemporary art spread across several museums. Since then he has been active not only as a collector but also as an inspired initiator of art projects at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and other art institutions. Han Nefkens has helped Museum Boijmans van Beuningen to realise a variety of exhibitions, interventions, commissions and acquisitions. For example, in 2005 Nefkens helped finance the acquisition of the enormous installation ‘Notion Motion’ by the Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, and the permanent video installation ‘Let Your Hair Down’ by Pipilotti Rist was commissioned by H+F Patronage.
The exhibition and the publication ‘Han Nefkens - 10 Years of Patronage’ has been designed by the visual artist Milou van Ham in association with Steffen Maas. The catalogue will be available from the museum shop, price €29,95 and via our online shop: webshop.boijmans.nl.
