With the exhibition, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was exploring the boundaries of fashion. Today’s fashion designers work more and more often with installations, performances and sculptural designs and in their turn influence the art world. The Art of Fashion revealed the sparks that fly at the interface between fashion and art.
More than 76.000 people paid a visit to the spectacular exhibition. In 2009, the number of young visitors to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen increased by nearly 40%, partly because of The Art of Fashion. Many fashionistas found their way to the museum for the very first time.
The Art of Fashion showed objects and design by some 25 international designers and artists. Five of them were commissioned to make new work specifically for the exhibition. The H+F Fashion on the Edge programme allowed designers to abandon the strict rules of fashion and make work unconstrained by other considerations. The relationship between the two disciplines is revealed by these and other works at the cutting edge of fashion and art.
The exhibition was accompanied by The Art of Fashion catalogue, which examines the work and the backgrounds of the artists and designers taking part. (ISBN 978-90-6918-241-4, €17,50) There was also a book, Fashion and Imagination, (d’jonge Hond Publishers, ISBN 978-90-89101-40-2, €39,95), which throws light on the background to the relationship between art and fashion.
The Art of Fashion was compiled by guest curators José Teunissen (lecturer at ArtEZ Arnhem) and Judith Clark (exhibition maker, London).
The exhibition was made possible by the H+F Fashion on the Edge programme of author and art collector Han Nefkens, and by the Mondriaan Foundation, SNS Reaal Fonds and the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds.
The Dutch edition of ELLE was media partner. The exhibition was a major part of the official programme of Holland Art Cities 2009-2010.
