Would the world look more beautiful if we danced every day? How can dance change someone’s perspective on themselves and the world? As part of the exhibition Change the System, visitors can explore this for themselves with choreographer Connor Schumacher.
Personal change is central to the Transitioning Values public movement sessions. In these workshops, participants will become a dynamic part of the exhibition, under the clear instructions of choreographer Connor Schumacher. They will experience the transition from passive viewer to active and creative participant. In this way, together with Connor Schumacher, the public will form a movement, figuratively and literally.
Taking the body as a starting point, we will explore how you can make yourself open to change. Can you more readily involve others in a process when you are more aware of your own body? How does a greater awareness of the space influence what you see, feel and hear?
Participation in the sessions is free of charge and open to all, amateur or professional. Reservations are essential. Please note that the sessions will be conducted in English.
Dancer and choreographer Connor Schumacher began making performances in 2012. Since 2013 he works under the umbrella of Dansateliers, Rotterdam. He made his first museum performance, I Trust in this Life We Will Have Another Moment Alone, at the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht in 2014 as part of the EU project Performing Gender. In 2015, he was selected to participate in Dancing Museums, a two-year-long research project (partly financed by the EU) into the effects of choreography on museum visitors in eight museums in Europe, including the Louvre in Paris, de National Gallery in London and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Transitioning Values is the third project that Connor has developed for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen since 2015.
From 14 October 2017 to 14 January 2018, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents visions for change by a new generation of designers. Change the System shows the impact they are having in solving global problems. The exhibition occupies eight galleries and is divided into three themes: scarcity, conflict and plurality. It brings together the work of fifty Dutch and foreign designers and artists, including Eric Klarenbeek, Iris van Herpen, Jólan van der Wiel, Elisa van Joolen, Boyan Slat and Christien Meindertsma.
Transitioning Values is produced by Dansateliers and is partially financed by the New Makers Scheme of the Performing Arts Fund NL.
