Jungle James

on view in 2019

In 2019, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen will organise an exhibition about the breath-taking Surrealist garden ‘Las Pozas’, created in the Mexican jungle by the wealthy English collector and art patron, Edward James.

In the 1930s, James was the most important patron of artists such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte and amassed a large collection of Surrealist artworks. On two occasions in the 1970s, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen had an opportunity to acquire important pieces from his collection. The exhibition ‘Jungle James’ centres on James’ years in Mexico, his contacts with Surrealist artists there and his involvement in the Mexican magazine S.nob. The exhibition will feature a special, interactive audio work, photographs and archival materials relating to the creation of ‘Las Pozas’, which have never previously been shown in the Netherlands, and artworks by important artists who immigrated to Mexico. The project is being developed in partnership with Fundació Pedro y Elena Hernández.
