‘Good Company’ is the overarching title of a series of drawings that Paul van der Eerden (1954) has made since he graduated from art school in 1979.

Every now and then he adds a new piece to the series, which currently numbers 310 drawings. They are not copies but rather interpretations of historical artworks that have made a deep impression on him and which he brings to life within his own oeuvre. Sometimes he draws the works directly from the original in a museum, but in most cases he bases his drawing on a postcard of the work.

Interpretations

Van der Eerden’s sources of inspiration range from Lucas Cranach the Elder to Marcel Broodthaers. Several of the drawings are based on works in the collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, including Salvador Dalí’s painting Shirley Temple, The Youngest, Most Sacred Monster of the Cinema in Her Time (1939). Van der Eerden has a great interest in the Surrealists. He shares their playfulness, love of language and fascination for art by psychiatric patients and non-Western art.

Biography

Paul van der Eerden (1954) was born and raised in Rotterdam. He studied art at the Academy of Visual Arts (now the Willem De Kooning Academy) in Rotterdam (1974-79) and later earned a teacher-training degree in history (1988). A year ago he moved to Dordrecht, but he still feels a close connection with Rotterdam and with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which has a large collection of his drawings. His works are also in the collections of the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Stedelijk Museum in Schiedam, The Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven and the Teylers Museum in Haarlem.
