Does the artist live forever in his work? Or does the work - and inevitably the artist - fade into obscurity? Sef Peeters (1947, Venlo) piles many cubic metres of work by his contemporaries in order to approach this poignant question from different perspectives. Sometimes it is a matter of ‘ars longa, vita brevis’: ‘art is long, life short’. But more often it’s a matter of ‘sinking into oblivion’ and the work fades into obscurity. Even a place in the museum does not seem able to offer a ticket to eternity. A work of art is mortal, just like the artist who made it. If it withstands the test of time, it becomes ‘Art’. If not, it is compost and enriches the soil for the art of the future.
In addition to this installation, Sef Peeters also exhibits a series of drawings he found in his own archives.
On the video channel Arttube.nl you can see a video about Sef Peeters and his installation. This video shows Sef Peeters working in the museum, building the installation. He talks about the work’s background and about the difficult relationship between art and life.
