Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s current storage facilities no longer meet today’s stringent collections management requirements and offer too little space for the museum’s growing art collection. The museum and Rotterdam City Council, which owns a large part of the collection, have therefore taken the initiative to build a new storage facility. The Verre Bergen Foundation has made supporting financial means available to realise this new Collections Building in the Museumpark.
The new Collections Building will, of course, include depots in which the art objects will be securely stored in optimal climate-controlled conditions. But the building will also offer space and services to private collectors. Furthermore, a large part of the building will be accessible to the public. It will be an inviting place, full of life as works of art will frequently be transported, conserved and exhibited.
The Collections Building will be part of an inviting entrance to the Museumpark, creating a welcoming venue for existing festivals and interaction between the building and visitors to the park.
Following an international call for entries, five architectural teams have been selected to submit a design. Their proposals are displayed here and will be judged by a jury.
