This summer Klaas Kloosterboer, Chris Martin and Jim Shaw will transform the Submarine Wharf into a gigantic art studio. This is the fourth consecutive summer that Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, in collaboration with Port of Rotterdam, is organising an exhibition of contemporary art in Rotterdam’s docklands. 'Submarine Wharf - XXXL Painting' is on view from 8 June until 29 September.
The XXXL Painting Symposium will take place on Friday 7 June, one day before the official opening of the exhibition XXXL Painting in the Submarine Wharf.
The speakers are as follows: Elodie Evers from the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf will talk about the work of Chris Martin, Laurence Sillars from Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art will talk about the work of Jim Shaw, and Camiel van Winkel will talk about the work of Klaas Kloosterboer. Els Hoek and Sjarel Ex, curators of the exhibition, will provide an introduction and will lead a Q&A session with the artists. The symposium will be followed by an exclusive preview of the exhibition in the Submarine Wharf.
The symposium will be conducted in English.

Rotterdam Art Weekend
Together with events at TENT and Stichting AVL-Mundo, the openings on Saturday 8 June at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and the Submarine Wharf will ensure an exciting Rotterdam Art Weekend. The weekend kicks off on Friday 7 June with ‘Less is More, More or Less’ in TENT. This daylong event will address the de-acquisition of public art in Rotterdam. The same afternoon Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is organising a symposium about the work of painters Klaas Kloosterboer, Chris Martin and Jim Shaw to coincide with the exhibition XXXL Painting in the Submarine Wharf. On Saturday evening there is the opening of Territory, an exhibition in the silo and adjacent outdoor site of Stichting AVL-Mundo (established by artist Joep van Lieshout) on the north bank of the River Maas. And with ‘Route du Nord’, Rotterdam North will provide the lively backdrop for new art, music and literature the whole weekend long.
