The Submarine Wharf is one of the Port of Rotterdam’s initiatives to bring a broader public in contact with the harbour and to improve the quality of the docklands.
The Submarine Wharf is part of the RDM Campus at Heijplaat. The RDM was founded in 1902 and was established at Heijplaat. The Submarine Wharf was built in 1937. Due to bankruptcy the area fell into disuse. Currently this industrial heritage site is being redeveloped with a focus on education, innovative businesses and culture. This year the RDM Campus was named the Netherlands’ most successful redevelopment project by the Heritage Platform of the Open University.
