from September 29 2012 extended until February 2013
This autumn Rejina Pyo, winner of the Han Nefkens Fashion Award 2012, will present her work in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. From 29 September Pyo’s collection ‘Structural Mode’ will be on view in the Willem van der Vorm gallery and in the Richard Serra Room.
A special jury - Viktor & Rolf, Penny Martin, Han Nefkens and José Teunissen - selected Pyo as the winner. The prize consists of an autumn presentation in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in 2012 and prize money of 25,000 Euro, of which 15,000 Euro is intended as a commission for the exhibition. This biennal prize was this year aimed at fashion designers in non-Western and lesser known European countries.
Rejina Pyo is a Korean born fashion designer based in London. Immediately after graduating from her MA Fashion at Central Saint Martins she was taken on by Roksanda Ilincic to work at her eponymous label as first assistant designer. She also collaborated with the H&M owned 'Weekday', creating a range of designs based on her MA collection that are sold across Europe in their chain of stores.
Inspired by modern art and architecture, Rejina Pyo created a stand out collection for her Central Saint Martins MA show at London Fashion Week. Her use of wooden sculptures together with fluid dresses created a beautifully idiosyncratic mood that captured the attention of the fashion press. It also captured the attention of Vassilis Zidianakis from ATOPOS CVC who curated the 'ARRRGH! Monsters in Fashion' exhibition, hosted at the Benaki Museum in Athens, where Pyo's collection was presented as part of this exhibition.
Rejina Pyo's newly commissioned work for Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen focuses on her long time study of fashion and art and is entitled 'Structural Mode'. It is another statement collection working on the boundary between wearable garments and art works, fusing together elements of fashion and sculpture.
This exhibition is part of the ‘Design in Boijmans’ programme. This summer design has been spotlighted in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. With the renewed arrangement of the museum collection and several design exhibitions, in 2012 a lot of attention is paid to design in the museum.
