Thomas Rentmeister’s colourful smooth sculptures are currently on show in Gallery 49, the gallery leading to the museum restaurant.
Although Rentmeister is fond of unusual materials such as sugar and paper handkerchiefs, this does not mean he is not a true sculptor with a keen eye for volume, mass and spatiality. The Berlin-based artist is well known for his large plastic objects in a single colour.
In this video, curator for modern and contemporary art Saskia van Kampen-Prein shows us three works by Thomas Rentmeister. She explains how Rentmeister playfully refers to forms from the real world, and she shows why the artist makes his 'blobs' so glossy.
