In 2010 Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen produced its own art programme for television, a world first. Boijmans TV is a programme about art, based on a concept by Wilfried de Jong and Sander Burger. It amounts to more than an art magazine: we meet not just the artists but museum visitors, the attendants and other museum staff as well. Boijmans TV presents art in a manner accessible to everyone. It is an informative programme with a twist: sometimes dramatic, sometimes comical and usually absurd.
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is using the television programme to take art into the living rooms of the million or so inhabitants of Rijnmond – the Greater Rotterdam Area – reaching people who would not normally cross the museum’s threshold so readily. Judging by the audience figures for the first series broadcast on TV Rijnmond, with the 13 episodes being watched by a total of no less than 1.5 million people in 2010, Boijmans TV has hit the bull’s-eye. After transmission, each episode can also be viewed on the museum’s online video channel, arttube.boijmans.nl.
Due to the overwhelming success of the series, all thirteen episodes will be available in a unique DVD box set from 5 March. This DVD box set is now on sale at the Museum Shop and can also be ordered in our webshop.
The Boijmans TV series is a collaboration between Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, RTV Rijnmond and Ro Theater, and was developed with the support of the VSBfonds, the museum’s education partner, the Dutch Cultural Media Fund and the Rotterdam Media Fund. The series was produced by Dragan Bakema and Kuba Szutkowski of Rotterdam-based production bureau Popov Film. Directors: Sander Burger and Jetse Batelaan.
