In 1949 an illustrated diary was a novelty. In the years since then, the Boijmans diary has become an institution and we can now look back on a long and rich tradition. And that is precisely what we will do in this sixty-fifth Boijmans diary. The diary for 2013 offers a retrospective in words and images. A little arithmetic tells us that since 1949 almost 3500 illustrations of approximately 2300 different works of art have appeared in the Boijmans diaries.
The great diversity of the collection has always been an important starting point in compiling the diaries. But the collection also contains true highlights, which deserve to be shown more than once. Which painting has been featured most? And which drawing, sculpture and work of decorative art? And which artist have we encountered most frequently over the past sixty-five years? This is also a focus of this diary.
The Boijmans diary contains not only the collection, but also the history of the museum. First and foremost the 2013 edition is about the history of the Boijmans diary itself. Throughout its sixty-five years it has remained highly recognisable, if only by its spiral binding. Also a novelty in 1949! But much has changed. There has been the transition from black and white to colour, and there were other technological developments. No less important have been the shifting visions of the editors and designers. In the interplay between the two, the Boijmans diary has had a different face each year. This story is told here not only in words but also in images. Dozens of pages from earlier diaries document the development of the Boijmans diary over a period of sixty-five years.
