Willem van der Vorm Foundation

Gerard Dou, The Quack, 1652. Loan: Stichting Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen 1939

Willem van der Vorm (1873-1957), harbour baron and collector, is one of the most loyal benefactors of Museum Boymans. Director Hannema advised him on the compilation of this collection and Van der Vorm was closely involved in founding the Museum Boymans Foundation. During the first meeting in 1939, he donated the Charlatan to the museum, a highlight from the oeuvre of Dou. A generous gesture that was later followed by many more.

Initially, the collection of Willem van de Vorm was exhibited after his death in his home on the Westersingel. In 1972, this building had to make way for the metro and the Willem van der Vorm Foundation decided to offer the collection they administered, including works by Gerard ter Borch, Gabriel Metsu and Anthonie van Dijck on long-term loan to the museum. Since then, this collection has been expanded with several works, including the very special Tour de César by Paul Cézanne.
