For forty years, husband and wife Van Beuningen-de Vriese collected pre-industrial implements: cooking, eating, drinking and pouring utensils, also other types of archaeological implements dating from the eleventh century to the middle of the nineteenth century. This extensive collection of more than ten thousand items was initially loaned to the museum in 1983 and in December 1990, amended into a donation to the municipality of Rotterdam. This was to mark the completion of a building, the Paviljoen Van Beuningen-de Vriese, designed by the architect Hubert-Jan Henket specially for this collection and opened in the spring of 1991.
In 2010, the Dutch Utensils Foundation will award the H.J.E. van Beuningen Prize for the fifth time.
