Old Art

The Old Art collection contains paintings and sculptures by artists who were born before 1850. This includes the great masters such as Jan van Eyck, Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt van Rijn. The Northern and Southern Dutch art of the 15th to the 17th centuries, the Italian art of the 16th and 17th century and French art of the 18th century is particularly well represented.

Modern art

The collection of Modern art consists of works of artists born after 1850. You will find here works by famous artists such as Claude Monet and Wassily Kandinsky, Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys and contemporary art by, for example, Gerald Richter or Pipilotti Rist. The collection of surrealism is unique, featuring great masters such as René Magritte, Salvador Dalí and others.

Drawings and prints

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has one of the world’s most important collections of drawings and an extensive library of prints. The collection contains works by masters such as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Antonio Pisanello, Jean Antoine Watteau and Paul Cézanne.

Applied art and design

The Applied art and design collection contains both medieval china and valuable decorative items from the Golden Age and modern office items. The oldest items in the collection date from the 11th century, the newest are design objects and implements from the 21st century.

City collection

Since 1987, city curators have been working at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and these pay particular attention to the visual arts and design produced by people from Rotterdam. They are compiling a City collection. This now contains a thousand objects dating mainly from 1945 until now, produced by Rotterdam artists and designers.
