A unique retrospective

Guest curator Jan Debbaut, former Director of Collections at Tate Modern, has teamed up with Marijke van Warmerdam to curate this major retrospective. This is the first time Marijke van Warmerdam’s work has been shown on this scale in the Netherlands.

Over the past twenty years Marijke van Warmerdam (1959) has built up a diverse oeuvre, comprising films, photographic works, sculptures, installations and, recently, paintings. In her work Van Warmerdam shows us the everyday world that surrounds us from an unexpected viewpoint. Her vision of the world is light, often humorous, surprising and often breathtaking.

The exhibition includes the film loop works that are now classics within her oeuvre, such as ‘Handstand’ (1992) and ‘Skytypers’ (1997), but also new works that she has made specially for this exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. A documentary showing the artist at work by filmmaker Rudolf Evenhuis will receive its premiere in the exhibition.

On the museum’s online video channel ArtTube you can watch a short version of this documentary, which features interviews with Marlene Dumas, gallerist Kees van Gelder, guest curator Jan Debbaut and Lynne Cooke. The film will be shown at regular interval during the exhibition.
