Ambassador and minister opened Brazil Contemporary
The extraordinary project Brazil Contemporary was launched by Brazilian ambassador José Artur Denot Medeiros and Dutch minister of Culture Ronald Plasterk in a ceremony attended by the mayor of Rotterdam, Ahmed Aboutaleb.
Every aspect of Brazil’s vibrant culture is explored. Brazil Contemporary – Contemporary art, architecture, visual culture and design presents art with a capital A, including photography, video art, magazines and graphic art, design and games. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen presents work by contemporary Brazilian artists Ernesto Neto, Rivane Neuenschwander, Cao Guimarães, and Ricardo Basbaum alongside the work of one of Brazil’s most celebrated artists, Hélio Oiticica (1937-1980).
At the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) visitors can experience the metropolis São Paulo. Surrounded by film screens, photos and objects typical of São Paulo’s streets, visitors are plunged into the almost unimaginably fast-paced life of the city. The Nederlands Fotomuseum zooms in on Brazil’s dynamic visual culture. Examples of photography, video art, design, games, fashion and magazines reveal that, in Brazil, visual culture is a scintillating cocktail of high and low, elitist and populist, artistic and applied arts.
